How to Choose the Right Psychologist in Punjab
Psychologist, counsellor or coach? A practical guide to working out which professional your situation actually calls for, and how to check credentials in India.

Short answer: Decide first whether you need clinical assessment and treatment or a structured space to think and talk. For assessment and treatment, look for an RCI-registered clinical psychologist. For distress, relationships, decisions and patterns, counselling or coaching is usually the practical fit. In both cases, ask what actually happens in a session before you pay for one.
Most people searching for a psychologist in Punjab are not looking for a diagnosis. They are looking for someone qualified, private and unshockable to talk to. Getting the category right the first time saves money, weeks, and the willingness to try again.

Who does what
Clinical psychologist. Trained and registered to assess, diagnose and treat psychological conditions, including psychological testing and structured therapy. The right choice for suspected depression, OCD, PTSD, bipolar disorder or anything that has been severe and persistent.
Psychiatrist. A medical doctor. The right choice where medication may be needed, where symptoms are severe or worsening, or where there is any risk to life.
Counsellor. Works through conversation with grief, breakups, relationship strain, family conflict, low confidence and situational stress. No diagnosis, no treatment.
Life coach. Works on direction, decisions, habits, goals and follow-through.
There is more overlap in practice than the labels suggest, and none of these categories is superior. They answer different questions. If you are unsure which you need, say exactly that at first contact; a responsible practitioner will tell you if you are in the wrong place.
How to verify credentials in India
Clinical psychologists in India are registered with the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI). If someone describes themselves as a clinical psychologist, you are entitled to ask for their registration details, and a genuine practitioner will not be offended by the question.
Counselling and coaching are not licensed professions in India. That does not make them illegitimate — it means the burden of judgement sits with you. Ask who trained them, what the training involved, and how they decide when to refer someone on.
Questions to ask before booking
- What actually happens in a first session?
- How long does this kind of work usually run?
- How will we know whether it is working?
- What do you not work with, and what would make you refer me elsewhere?
- What are your fees, and is there a charge for cancelling?
The last two matter most. A practitioner with a clear sense of their own limits is safer than one who claims everything is within scope.
Warning signs
Be cautious of anyone who guarantees a cure, promises a fixed number of sessions before hearing your situation, discourages you from seeing a doctor, asks for a large package payment upfront at first contact, or describes clinical conditions as things they can "remove". Confidence is not the same as competence.
Online or in person
For conversation-based support, most people find online sessions equivalent to meeting in person — and in Punjab they solve two real problems at once: travel, and being seen walking into a clinic. Situations involving risk, severe symptoms, or the need for formal assessment should be handled in person by a clinician.
Where this practice fits
Coach JP Grewal is a life coach and non-clinical counsellor, not a registered psychologist. Sessions are private online conversations in Punjabi, Hindi or English, and referral is offered when clinical care is the right route. If that is the kind of support you are looking for, the pages on counselling psychology in Punjab and mental health counselling in Punjab explain the work in detail, or you can read the wider overview on finding a psychologist in Punjab.
